JALTAN, established in 1998 with the cooperation and guidance of the Japan Foundation and the Embassy, is an implementation body for conducting the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in Kathmandu. As of December 2022, it has 24 member schools and 138 member teachers. JALTAN promotes interaction and information exchange among Japanese language schools, and raises the level of each school.
With the cooperation of the Japan Foundation, it holds Japanese language teacher seminars to improve teaching techniques and promote the improvement of Japanese language skills of teachers. JALTAN also implements the TOPJ Practical Japanese Proficiency Test, holds all-Nepal Japanese speech and singing competitions, and established the JALTAN Japanese Language Resource Center. Additionally, it holds events introducing Japanese culture, such as ikebana, to promote understanding of Japan.
